The Residential Course

What students do during a course

The courses combine hands-on conservation learning with confidence-building and teamwork:

  • Ecology and nature conservation learning in a real wilderness setting

  • Citizen science activities and practical environmental education

  • Team-building, communication and leadership development

  • Activities that encourage learners to understand how everyday lifestyle choices affect the environment

Impact

Leseding High School (March 2025)

TWT sponsored sixty Grade 10 students from Leseding High School (plus a teacher and a School Governing Body member) to attend a residential course at Lapalala Wilderness School from 10–14 March 2025.

TWT set out clear aims for the week:

  • spark interest and passion for the natural world and conservation

  • build knowledge of local and global environmental issues, and how individuals can make positive changes

  • develop team-building and leadership

The course resulted in such positive outcomes including learners developing orienteering, teamwork and communication skills, and gaining practical conservation knowledge designed to empower future “conservation champions.”

As noted by a supporter:

“It’s really encouraging to see the breadth of activities that these courses enable them to experience. They can only help in building all sorts of life skills and experiences for these youngsters.”

Future Plans: TWT will be sending 62 students and two teachers from Meetsetshehla Secondard School from 2nd-6th March 2026, and another group in 2027.
