From Classroom to Wilderness: A Transformative Week for Meetsetshehla Students

Each year, The Waterberg Trust (TWT) proudly supports a group of young learners from Meetsetshehla School to attend a life-changing residential programme at Lapalala Wilderness School (LWS). This long-standing partnership continues to open doors for 62 children annually, offering them a unique opportunity to connect with nature, build confidence, and expand their horizons.

Lapalala Wilderness School, set within the extraordinary Waterberg biosphere, is a non-profit environmental education centre dedicated to inspiring the next generation of conservation leaders. Through immersive, outdoor learning experiences, students are introduced to biodiversity, sustainability, and the importance of protecting South Africa’s natural heritage. For many Meetsetshehla learners, this five-day residential course is their first time experiencing wildlife and wilderness so closely - an unforgettable and often transformative experience.

This year’s group embraced every aspect of the programme, from guided bush walks and ecological lessons to teamwork challenges and reflective discussions around conservation. Beyond environmental education, LWS also places strong emphasis on personal development, building self-esteem, communication skills, and a sense of responsibility.

One particularly moving reminder of the broader challenges faced by these learners came from two recent public speaking competition winners. Both students revealed they had worn borrowed school uniforms during their presentations. Thanks to LWS support, their prize included a full set of new uniforms, something they received with immense gratitude. It is a small but powerful example of how practical support can make a meaningful difference in a child’s confidence and dignity.

LWS is also working to promote literacy within the Waterberg community. Their library, though valued, remains under-resourced, and there is a growing need for more books, particularly novels that can inspire a love of reading among students. Initiatives like this complement the environmental education programme, helping to nurture well-rounded, curious, and capable young people.

The Waterberg Trust is proud to continue its partnership with Lapalala Wilderness School, ensuring that each year more children have access to these enriching experiences. Together, they are not only fostering environmental awareness but also investing in the future of the Waterberg’s communities, one learner at a time.
