The Waterberg Trust (TWT) is proud to be supporting local primary schools in developing sustainable vegetable gardens that will provide fresh, nutritious produce for learners while teaching valuable life skills.

Recently, TWT supplied gardening equipment and materials to two schools in the Waterberg region, Mahlasedi Primary School and Mokolo Primary School, to help establish and expand their vegetable patches. These gardens are part of a wider vision to encourage food security, healthy eating, and environmental awareness within schools, crèches, and local homes.
At Mahlasedi Primary School, learners and staff have embraced the project enthusiastically. However, like many communities in the region, they have faced challenges from recent heavy rains, which unfortunately washed away some of the garden beds. Despite this setback, the school remains committed to rebuilding and continuing the project.

Mokolo Primary School has experienced similar difficulties, with heavy rainfall also damaging some of their planting beds. Encouragingly, the school has taken strong ownership of the initiative by appointing two teachers to oversee the garden programme. One of the teachers recently completed a four-day training course run by the Waterberg Rhino Food Garden project and will now work alongside volunteers to help maintain and grow the school garden full-time. You can see in the photos below the before (some old posts and netting saved from previous years) to after the TWT funding and what they have transformed their vegetable garden into.
What a transformation!
These projects are about far more than simply growing vegetables. They are helping young people understand where food comes from, how to care for the environment, and how communities can become more self-sufficient.
TWT also recently visited another large primary school with around 1,400 pupils, where learners are eager to begin planting in a shade-netted garden area. The school currently requires additional support in the form of fencing posts and infrastructure to fully establish the garden.
Through these partnerships, The Waterberg Trust continues to invest in practical, community-led initiatives that support education, nutrition, and resilience for future generations. Donations to The Waterberg Trust will enable more schools like Mokolo Primary and Mahlasedi Primary to develop vegetable gardens.
