New Uniforms, New Confidence

For many children in rural South Africa, attending school is about far more than learning, it is also about dignity, confidence, and belonging. At several schools supported by The Waterberg Trust (TWT), the need for basic school uniforms and shoes remains significant, with some children unable to afford even the essentials required for daily school life.

Reports (2024) suggest that some households spend up to 20% of their income on school uniforms alone, placing enormous pressure on already vulnerable families. While education may officially be free at many public schools, the hidden costs of uniforms, shoes, stationery, and transport often remain major barriers for children from low-income households.

During recent visits to one primary school, where learners proudly wear navy and yellow uniforms, it became clear just how great the need is. In group photographs, children without proper uniforms were quietly moved to one side and excluded from the posed pictures, a small but upsetting reminder of how poverty can affect a child’s confidence and sense of inclusion.

Support from donors and local partners can make a significant difference. At one of the schools supported by TWT, Sister Grace regularly delivers second-hand uniforms donated by a school in Gauteng, helping ensure that more children can attend school feeling comfortable and included.

TWT supporter, Sophie Williams-Thomas, recently visited Melkrivier School, where the principal warmly welcomed further donations of books, blue school uniforms, school shoes, football boots, and winter hats. The school also hopes to establish a vegetable garden in the future to support learner nutrition and practical education.

For many families, a pair of shoes or a clean school jersey is not simply clothing, it is the opportunity for a child to walk into the classroom with pride. Through continued community support, TWT hopes to help more children access the resources they need to learn, participate, and thrive.

Donations of good-quality second-hand uniforms, shoes, books, and sports equipment can make an enormous difference to rural schools and the children they serve.
